Unexpected Sight
Bethany walks through the mall, scanning baby items. Her eyes catch movement ahead.
BETHANY’s POV: Larry and Lynette walk side by side, laughing, carrying matching shopping bags, completely unaware of her presence.
BETHANY (whispering, stunned): No… it can’t be…
Her hands tighten on the stroller handle. Her heart races.
LARRY (checking a jacket): I think this one’s perfect. What do you think?
LYNETTE (smiling): Yeah, it’s nice. But we should check the other colors too.
Hidden Shock
Bethany steps closer, hiding behind a display of baby toys. She watches them, unable to look away.
BETHANY (voice trembling): Together… they’re together…
She leans against a nearby shelf, trying to process what she’s seeing.
Extreme close-up: her eyes widen. Jaw tightens. She fights the urge to cry, scream, run.
BETHANY (under her breath): Why didn’t I know?
The Evidence Grows
Larry and Lynette approach a shoe display, laughing quietly. The chemistry is obvious.
BETHANY (softly, almost inaudible): This… this isn’t right.
Her hands shake, gripping her shopping list so tightly it crinkles.
BETHANY (whispering): I came for baby stuff… not… this.
Close Call
Bethany inches forward, trying to remain hidden, but she bumps a display stand, sending a small toy to the floor.
LARRY (turning around): Did something fall?
Bethany ducks behind a rack of clothes, hoping they didn’t see her.
LYNETTE (laughing): Must be the wind, or maybe one of the kids.
She presses herself against the rack, trying to slow her breathing.
BETHANY (to herself): I can’t believe this… Larry… Lynette… here…
Internal Struggle
Bethany takes a deep breath, trying to collect herself. Her baby fusses in the stroller, adding tension.
BETHANY (softly, trying to calm herself): Okay… just… stay calm…
LARRY (to Lynette): Want to grab coffee after this?
Her heart skips. She can’t hear the answer clearly, but she doesn’t need to.
BETHANY (voice shaking): Coffee… together…
Vision blurs. Shock, hurt, confusion, anger surge.
Aftermath
Bethany walks past a stroller display, tense. Avoids looking directly at Larry and Lynette, sneaking glances.
BETHANY (to herself): How long… how long has this been going on?
She picks up a baby blanket, fingers over soft fabric, mind elsewhere. A child nearby drops a toy, snapping her back.
BETHANY (whispering): I thought… I thought I knew everything…
BETHANY (under her breath): Why… why didn’t anyone tell me?
Larry and Lynette head to the checkout.
BETHANY (softly, to herself): I… I need air.
Outside, breathing fresh air, she steels herself. One step at a time… but the image of them together will haunt her.
