Mike’s phone slipped from his hand the moment he heard the words.
Just hours earlier, Sunny had been laughing, teasing him about baby names, her hand resting protectively on her belly as if nothing in the world could harm what was growing inside her. Mike had kissed her forehead before leaving for work, promising to be back early. He never imagined that goodbye would haunt him for the rest of his life.
By the time Mike reached the hospital, the cold smell of antiseptic filled his lungs. The beeping machines echoed like a cruel reminder that something had gone terribly wrong. Sunny was lying on the hospital bed, her eyes red and swollen from endless tears, her face drained of color. Tubes were attached to her arm, and an oxygen line rested beneath her nose.
She turned her head slowly when she heard his footsteps.
That was all it took. Mike rushed to her side, grabbing her hand, fighting back tears he had never allowed himself to show before.
