Unexpected Call Before Montana Trip Read More

Safe Place
When the people you love arrive without answers, you know the truth is already in motion.

The Call

The evening was quiet, almost ordinary. Sharra stood at the kitchen sink, rinsing a coffee mug, when her phone vibrated against the counter. Larry’s name lit up the screen.

That alone made her pause. Larry didn’t call without a reason.

“Larry?”

Silence stretched across the line, heavy and deliberate.

“I’m going to leave Destiny and Brooke at your place for a few days.”

Something Wrong

Sharra straightened immediately.

“What? Why?”

Another pause — longer this time.

“I can’t explain right now.”

Her grip tightened on the phone.

“You don’t just drop kids off without explaining, Larry. What’s going on?”

He exhaled slowly, choosing his words with care.

“I need you to trust me. I’ll bring them tonight.”

The line went dead before she could say another word.

Arrival

An hour later, headlights flooded the driveway. Sharra stepped outside as the car stopped. Destiny and Brooke climbed out quietly, none of their usual energy present.

Destiny clutched her backpack. Brooke avoided eye contact.

“You good?” Sharra asked softly, kneeling beside Destiny.

Destiny nodded but didn’t smile.

Sharra stood and turned to Larry.

“Inside. Now.”

The Truth — Or Lack of It

The door barely closed before Sharra spoke again.

“Start talking.”

Larry removed his jacket, movements restless.

“It’s temporary.”

“That’s not an explanation.”

He rubbed his jaw, eyes dark.

“Things at home are… unstable.”

Sharra studied him carefully.

“Bethany?”

He didn’t answer. He didn’t need to.

“You’re hiding them here?”

“Protecting them,” he corrected. “There’s a difference.”

Nightfall

Later, Sharra tucked Destiny into bed.

“You can stay as long as you want, okay?”

Destiny hesitated.

“Is Dad mad?”

Sharra brushed her hair gently.

“No, sweetheart. Just stressed.”

Across the hall, Brooke sat on her bed, scrolling her phone, jaw tight.

“You wanna talk?” Sharra asked.

Brooke shrugged.

“Doesn’t matter.”

Unspoken Fears

Downstairs, Larry stood by the window, staring into the dark. Sharra joined him.

“You didn’t tell Bethany you brought them here, did you?”

He shook his head.

“She won’t take that well.”

A humorless smile crossed his face.

“She’s not taking anything well lately.”

Sharra turned to him fully.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

For the first time, uncertainty flickered across his face.

“I don’t know how much longer I can keep everything from blowing up.”

The Storm Approaches

Across town, Bethany stood alone, staring at the empty space where Destiny’s shoes usually sat. Her phone lay face-down on the table.

Something was wrong. Larry wasn’t answering.

Back at Sharra’s house, Larry grabbed his keys.

“You’re leaving?” Sharra asked.

“I have to fix something before it gets worse.”

“Just don’t drag the kids into another mess.”

He paused at the door.

“That’s exactly why they’re here.”

As Larry disappeared into the night and Bethany lifted her phone to dial again, Sharra stood in the quiet house, knowing one truth — this wasn’t over. Not even close.
