Larry should’ve kept his mouth shut. Instead, he leaned back with that smug half-smile and said, “All I’m saying is… Lynette’s hands aren’t exactly clean.”
The room went quiet. Bethany froze. Lynette’s jaw tightened. And just like that, the tension cracked the air.
Lynette wasn’t violent—at least, that’s what she told herself. But when Larry kept talking, hinting, nudging, pushing, something dark flickered behind her eyes.
Bethany noticed it first. “Don’t,” Bethany said softly. Larry laughed. Big mistake.
Larry never knows when to stop. He leaned forward, voice louder now.
“What? You gonna act like you wouldn’t swing if someone deserved it?”
Everyone looked at Lynette. Strike one.
Bethany stepped back, palms up. “This isn’t funny anymore,” she said.
But fear crept into her voice, and Lynette heard it. That fear stung worse than Larry’s words.
Strike two.
Phones came out. Whispers spread. Someone muttered, “She’s gonna snap.”
Lynette felt boxed in—not by Bethany, but by expectation. By the story Larry was writing for her.
Lynette’s fist clenched. Bethany flinched. Time slowed—one heartbeat where everyone thought it would happen.
“Go on,” Larry said. “Prove me right.” The third strike waited.
But the hand that moved wasn’t Lynette’s. Bethany slapped Larry—sharp, loud, undeniable.
Strike three.
No one spoke. “I warned you,” Bethany said. “I warned everyone.”
Larry left humiliated. The crowd faded.
